Moving out on your own at the ripe age of 20 often means having to live in a small space. My boyfriend and I had to down-size from our two bedroom, on campus apartment to a 360 square foot, real adult apartment. With almost 30 instruments in our possession, we had NO idea how to fit our belongings in half the space.

The apartment is cozy, but we have found a good set up! My biggest advice to musicians living in a cozy space is prioritizing. Do you want more space for instruments and books? Or do you want more sitting space? Does the size of your bedroom really matter? How much are you willing to compromise?

We have determined that square footage, although it matters, is often not worth paying extra for. When your hard earned money is paying rent, you're willing to pay 100 dollars less per month per person even if the apartment is small. When it comes to moving to a new place, I would consider heavily how much time you will truly spend in the space. Both Chris and I work 60-70 hours per week, and are not home much. This means we are pretty much just in the apartment for the nights, and occasional afternoons off. For us, having an extra bedroom, and balcony was not worth it, since both of us are often not home!

As you can see below, we prioritized the instruments! When we eat dinner we often sit on the couch, and eat off the coffee table. We ensured the office space was a priority, because Chris spends a lot of time arranging, composing, and recording. In our old place, neither of us spent a lot of time in the living/dining room, so we questioned the importance of one. 360 square feet is small, as you can see. But it is workable, and livable!
