Being a musician is difficult, but being a musician in the summer time can be even worse! Here are some tips on how to fill your summer with music.
1. Set up a good practice space
I have the fortunate opportunity to stay at my school for the next 12 months, meaning I have practice rooms at my disposal. For me, being at home was a constant struggle to ensure my practicing didn't suffer at the hands of a warm, sunny day. Set up an area in your room, or house, where you can specifically do music. This gets your mind to associate that area with your musicality.
2. Look for summer musicals
Most people live near a playhouse or theater that needs pit musicians, people to play roles, etc. Use this summer to expand your musical sense by getting involved. Many playhouses either take unpaid interns, or pay their musicians hourly!
3. Start a band and gig!
This is a lot easier said than done. Many nights of hard work, and many connections are involved in the rising of a local band. My significant other plays with his band, usually as a trio, and they have built many connections over the course of the semester to allow their fan base to grow.
4. Teach summer music lessons
Recruitment can also be terrifying if you are not a people person. Teaching summer lessons can be an excellent source of income as a side-gig, as well as building your portfolio and resume. Reach out using flyers, brochures, business cards, etc.
